This is the earliest known footage of a Merseyside derby. The game took place on 27th September 1902 at Goodison Park with Everton winning Liverpool 3-1. Man of the Match was Jack Sharp, a winger who also played for Lancashire and England at cricket and later went on to open a successful independent sports shop.

Here’s some fantastic footage of Preston North End v Aston Villa in 1905. It doesn’t look massively different from a non-league game these days – Muddy pitch, wooden changing rooms and the crowd waving at the novelty of a camera.
