Here we go then another Panini album and this time it’s Spain 1982. A time when sticker albums were presented in a much soberer format; The bouffants and facial hair do all the talking here. It’s also nice to see England have their proper badge in this album. I recently got the one for the latest World Cup album and for ‘commercial reasons’ the England badge has a St. George’s flag instead. So out of all the teams at the World Cup England are the only one not to give Panini permission to use their badge or a team photo. Dissapointing.

Is it the tournament’s greatest ever giant-killing? Not for me. Cameroon beating Argentina still tops it in my book. Nonetheless, Pape Bouba Diop upstaged France’s cast of stars to score the winner after 30 minutes as Senegal humbled the defending champions 1-0 in the World Cup curtain-raiser in Seoul. It’s a shame the defending champions don’t play first anymore.

It’s hard to see a match-up quite like this at the World Cup. Actually, North Korea v South Korea would be pretty tasty what with them remembering they are still at war with each other following their spat last month. This is East Germany who were the only team able to beat the West German side that won the 1974 World Cup, a highly symbolic event for both sides of the nation, which remained the only meeting of both teams.

This is agonising. Hans-Günter Bruns of Borussia Mönchengladbach’s runs the entire length of the pitch in Bundesliga game away at Bayern Munich, plays a lovely one-two and fires past the keeper……. I wouldn’t have blamed him if he’d put his hands on his hips and carried on walking straight off the pitch.

As England go into their final warm-up fixtures for the World Cup in South Africa here is a look back at when they prepared for the 1988 European Championships by playing those giants of the game, non-league Aylesbury United. The first clip shows the dressing room scenes before the game and the second is part of the 7-0 win for England despite Cliff Hercules going close for the Ducks. You might also be interested to know that this was the one and only time this red England away shirt was ever worn.

If only England had qualified for USA 94 and I could have collected the Panini album knowing that one day I would open a packet of stickers and get a mugshot of Stuart Ripley and Andy Sinton. Anyway, here it is the complete (Sinton-less) Panini USA 94 album. Interesting to see most of the USA team without a professional club and were instead contracted to the US Soccer Federation to play regular friendlies. Better still, Miguel Herrera the Mexican chuckle brother and some of those Bulgarian players who look like they have just had their handcuffs removed.

In 1995 Channel 4 did a one-off fly-on-the-wall documentary that followed Leyton Orient through their disastrous 1994-95 relegation season. Highlights included a nine-match losing streak, a 0% away win record, the collapse of the chairman’s coffee business due to the war in Rwanda and the club finding itself unable to pay the milk bill, with their coach company demanding payment upfront before away trips.

Most memorably of all though was co-manager John Sitton who became the unwitting star of the film with his potty-mouthed tirades and the half-time sacking of defender Terry Howard.

Sadly, Sitton hasn’t worked in football since since but has been a taxi driver, martial arts instructor and now compiles match statistics for results services.
