Here we go then another Panini album and this time it’s Spain 1982. A time when sticker albums were presented in a much soberer format; The bouffants and facial hair do all the talking here. It’s also nice to see England have their proper badge in this album. I recently got the one for the latest World Cup album and for ‘commercial reasons’ the England badge has a St. George’s flag instead. So out of all the teams at the World Cup England are the only one not to give Panini permission to use their badge or a team photo. Dissapointing.

Ayelsbury United v England

As England go into their final warm-up fixtures for the World Cup in South Africa here is a look back at when they prepared for the 1988 European Championships by playing those giants of the game, non-league Aylesbury United. The first clip shows the dressing room scenes before the game and the second is part of the 7-0 win for England despite Cliff Hercules going close for the Ducks. You might also be interested to know that this was the one and only time this red England away shirt was ever worn.

Classic Umbro Shirts

If you are anything like me and could happily spend all day looking at football shirts you might want to head over to the Umbro archive on Flickr where they are on a quest to photograph and name hundreds of old shirts. It’s an absolute goldmine for classic kits – good, bad and Scotland Away 1991. Here are five of the best:

FC Saarbruecken

One of the most erotic football shirts I think I have ever seen. Blue and black stripes will always be a seductive combination and there aren’t many teams who haven’t at least tried this combination on their second or third choice kits at least once. It’s the gold piping and exotic looking badge that makes this one short really stand out but who does that badge belong to I ask? Well, turns out that it’s not that glamorous actually, it’s from the German fourth division and a team called FC Saarbruecken. Still, cracking top.

Mexico 1966

There is a very good reason why retro shirts are so popular these days. Who in their right mind really wants to cover themselves in static nylon and a load of corporate logos when you could have something like this? It’s the original shirt won by the Mexican national side at the 1966 World Cup. It just looks like an out and out proper football shirt. It was ahead of it’s time as well, the three quarter length sleeves are unusual but they have featured on quite a few Adidas jerseys recently.

Shrewsbury

The entire seventies captured in a football shirt. The fashionista of Shrewsbury must have had a field day with that glorious orange collar. The logos piped down the sleeve were one of Umbro’s forays into adding a bit of branding but let’s be honest they were pretty naff against the superior three Adidas stripes. Naff but in a good way as these days Shrewsbury wear a generic Sunday league ProStar kit.

Universitario de Deportes

I’m not entirely sure this is a real shirt or some sort of commemorative top. I hope it’s a proper shirt because it looks fantastic. It belongs to Universitario de Deportes in Peru and the player on the front is Teodoro Fernández or “Lolo” as he was also known. He is one of Peru’s most revered players and one of Universitario de Deportes all time greats, so much so that their old stadium bears his name. His strength as a striker earned him the even better nickname of “El cañonero” (“The Cannoneer”) due to his powerful shooting where he ended up as the Peruvian league’s top-scorer in seven different seasons. What better way to remember him than by sticking his face on the front of the shirt?

Crystal Palace

This ultra cool shirt wouldn’t look out of place on Jesus Quintana down at the Holly Star Lanes bowling alley. No tacky sponsor or nylon in sight just 1950’s Bowling Chic at its best. Beautiful stuff.

Spider-Man Goalkeeper

Saint-Étienne keeper Jérémie Janot Spiderman steps in with the gloves against FC Istres back in 2005. He’s not the first though, the original spiderman footballer is surely Otilino Tenorio, although wearing Spiderman’s away kit.

It is scandalously missing Toto Schillaci and Roger Milla and if you look at the Italian side they have had three players who have since managed in the Premiership compared to just two of England’s. Enjoy…
