Charlton v Sunderland – Wembley 1998
This must go down as one of the most extraordinary games of football ever played at Wembley. An incredible hat-trick from Clive Mendonca, a Sunderland fan as a boy, and Richard Rufus’ first senior goal ensured a 4-4 draw after extra time. The goals continued to flow as the penalty shoot-out stood at 6-6…
Finally, Sasa Ilic, who had been playing non-League football for St Leondards Stamcroft in the Southern League at the start of the season, saved Michael Gray’s kick and fired Charlton into the riches of the Premier League. Just an incredible game from start to finish.
