The Gambeta
What is the “Gambetta”? In short it is a move, a turn, a dummy or a dribble that makes defenders tackle the wrong way. In Argentina though, the “Gambetta” is known as a metaphor for Argentinean life. Jorge Valdano explains it as such:
“It’s another kind of tango. It’s the pleasure of adding those extra flourishes, those twists and turns. There are two elements in the Gambetta. The first is skill to show that I, with my foot, have the skill to do anything — this gives a person dignity. The second is deceit. You have to fool the defender into believing exactly the opposite of what you are actually going to do. This taste for deceit is also very Argentinian. When you combine these two traits, then you have the most celebrated football move in Argentina, the Gambetta.”
