Scotland v Uruaguay 1986
At the 1986 world cup Scotland found themsleves in the so called group of death featuring Denmark, Uruguay and West Germany, or as Alloy McCoist put it “the group of certain death.” Scotland started off by losing their opening match 1-0 to Denmark and then enjoyed their best game against West Germany, where shades of 1982 against Brazil they briefly led the match thanks to a Gordon Strachan goal. In typical fashion they ended up losing the tie 2-1 and a victory in their final match against Uruguay was crucial to stand any chance for progressing. Uruguay on the other hand needed just a draw to qualify and went about it in the most cynical fashion possible. Just have a look at the vicious hack on Strachan after less than a minute by Jose Batista. How good were Scotland’s shorts by the way?
