It’s practised on the training ground but rarely attempted during a game; the volley straight from a corner is fraught with too many dangers. There is the small issue of putting the ball in just the right spot for the striker, the risk of giving the ball straight to the opposition but worse is the high likelihood of looking a pratt when it all goes wrong, which is why it looks so spectacular when it does make a rare appearance. Here are a few of the best.

Eyal Berkovic – Man City v Ipswich in the 2002 FA Cup

Tugay thunders in a long-range volley from Pedersen’s corner for Blackburn against Fulham in 2005

Alessio “powershot” Tacchinardi hits a perfect volley across his body for Juventus against Villareal

Gaizka Mendieta will probably never hit one sweeter than this for Valencia against Barca

Gianfranco Zola doing only what Gianfranco Zola can do against Norwich

And maybe the best of the lot – Paul Scholes for Man United against Bradford in 2000
